BARN CATS

Meow Mission’s Barn Cat program  is a life-saving initiative where traditionally unadoptable cats are placed in barn homes. These cats are considered unadoptable due to temperament; they’re not friendly pets, therefore they face euthanasia in our area shelters. Instead, we pull those cats and place them as working cats. They’re healthy  cats that have a right to life.

  • We do not have kittens
  • You do not select the cats; the highest risk of euthanasia are pulled first

Each cat is spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, treated for parasites, eartipped and microchipped. We do not charge an adoption fee but we wouldn’t say no to a tax-deductible donation!

Barn is a liberal term for any non-traditional home. We’ve placed cats in breweries, hardware stores, feed mills, stables, storage warehouses, golf courses, and many a “man cave”.

To be considered for adopting a working cat (or, ideally a pair) you need to:

  1. Own the property
  2. Have a structure available 24/7 for shelter – a barn, shed, garage, warehouse, etc.
  3. Agree to provide fresh water and food DAILY. Whether a cat mouses isn’t due to hunger, it’s instinct. A well nourished cat is healthy and that means they’re more apt to act like a cat, i.e. hunt.
  4. Agree to quarantine the cat for no less than 4 weeks while they acclilmate and bond with their new territory. You do this in a secure room, or we will loan you dog kennels. We provide litter, litter boxes, and food for this process. This means you’ll have to scoop litter and clean a kennel for those 4 weeks but after that, you can let them free-roam on your property.
